The device must be able to image plankton and other particles in water as color images, calculate indicators related to cell and particle size, pigmentation, color and shape from the images, and enable the easy processing of large sample volumes in a reasonable time. The device must be able to separate phytoplankton cells from other particles using chlorophyll fluorescence and enable the use of fluorescent dyes (FITC).
